Recycling bin

There appears to be a deeply embedded uneasiness in our culture about throwing away junk that can be reused. Perhaps, in part, it is guilt about consumption. Perhaps it also feels unnatural. Mother Nature doesn't throw stuff away. Dead trees, birds, beetles and elephants are pretty quickly recycled by the system.

Reduction

  • Compost kitchen scraps and yard waste rather than tossing in the trash
  • Look at how product packaging, and try to buy items with out packaging, or minimal packaging
  • Recycle everything!  OK, as much as possible
  • Donate items to charities
  • Purchase what you will eat or use within a specified time period
  • Use ceramic plates and glasses (or other reusable plates)
  • Grow organic food, this can be done in pots too!
  • Make your own cleaners and pesticides 
  • Buy in bulk when possible
  • Mulch mow your yard
  • Stop junk mail
  • Use rechargeable batteries
  • Reuse gift bags
  • Freeze leftovers if you don't plan to eat them the next day
  • Bring your own cloth bags to the store
  • If you get store bags, use them in other ways, such as a trash can liner
  • Reuse the containers (if safe)
  • Recycle computers and other electronics, or donate them to your local school
  • Return hangers to cleaners
  • Dispose of toxins properly
