Nature does have manure and she does have roots as well as blossoms, and you can't hate the manure and blame the roots for not being blossoms.

Building a Compost Bin

There are many options for compost bins now on the market. You can also make one yourself. It all depends on you style, thriftiness and/or available materials.

Most of the commercially available bins are made for quick composting, which speeds the composting rates four to six fold. They are normally a plastic type enclosure that is filled with finely shredded organic material. You will turn the compost a few times, and  normally turn out usable compost with in a month.

You can also make compost bins out of chicken wire, wood, bricks, or other items. This is the option I chose. I already had some wood around the house, and had to purchase some chicken wire. The photo at the top of the page are my bins. I saw the idea on an episode on HGTV with Paul James (I am a total fan of Paul James!) He had a 3 bin and showed how to make it. I didn't have that amount of space, and modified his plans to  be a 2 bin. I didn't have any plans, other than what I saw. It took me an afternoon to make it, and didn't cost very much. There are so many options when planning to make your own.

One option I have seen is to make a bin made of wire, chicken wire, or something comparable. It is made into a cylendar shape and can normally be self supported. Another option is to make a 4 square bin from wood, picket fence, pallets, etc. One person I taked to got free pallets from a business, and used 4, tied together to make his bin. If you have plenty of area, you can just make a pile behind a barn.
