Suet
2 cups suet, lard, bacon drippings or saved kitchen fat (no artificial fat)
1 to 2 cups yellow cornmeal
1 cup peanut butter
Dash of salt
1 cup bird seed

Melt suet over low heat. Allow to cool and harden, then heat again. Stir in peanut butter and other ingredients, reserving some of the corn or seeds. Allow to cool somewhat and pour into molds or form into balls. Roll balls in seed.

Suet Pinecone Feeder
Pinecones

1 cup crunchy peanut butter
1 cup lard
2 cups quick cooking oats
2 cups cornmeal
1 1/2 cups bird seed
1 cup wheat flour
1/3 cup sugar

Melt in pan peanut butter and lard. Stir in all remaining ingredients. Pour into molds for size of your feeder. About 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick. I just pour into square pan and cut to fit....or squish into pinecones. Store extra in freezer. You can also add in raisins or other dried fruit.

Hummingbird Nectar
1 cup sugar to 4 cups water. Mix, and bring to a boil for a short time. If you have any left over, refrigerate until needed. Do NOT use any colorants or dyes as they have been linked to birth defects in hummingbirds.

Wildlife "Cookies"
Use a cookie cutter to cut out bread cookies. Use a pencil to poke a hole in the top. Place a ribbon or twine through the hole, and use to hang outside on a tree.

Energy Muffins
Use a suet recipe. Place in muffin tin. Add fresh or dried berries on the top. Place a pipe cleaner into the suet before it hardens to act as a hanger. Wait until they have hardened and then hang outside on a tree.

Bagels
A good use for old bagels, instead of throwing them away! Spread peanut butter on the bagels and dip into birdseed. Use a ribbon or twine and hang on a tree.

Fruit Peels
Cut an orange, grapefruit or other fruit with a sturdy peel in half. Eat the fruit and save the peel for the project. Use a suit recipe and place the suit into the peel. You can attach ribbons to the peel by poking  a hole on both sides, or tying it around the peel. Hang it up on a tree outside.

How to Render Suet:

You can trim excess fat off beef cuts and store in the freezer until enough fat is achieved or you can purchase beef fat from the grocery store or your nearby butcher.

  1. Grind the beef fat with a meat grinder or finely chop the fat.
  2. Heat the fat over a low to medium flame until its liquefied.
  3. Strain by pouring melted suet through a fine cheesecloth.
  4. Let cool to harden.
  5. Repeat steps 2-3. If the fat is not rendered twice, the suet will not cake properly.
  6. Let cool to harden and store in a covered container in the freezer.
