Trees are a key element in any garden. They are the tallest layer, adding
charm and shade to your yard. Trees provide the wildlife shelter from predators and the elements. Try to plant your habitat
to mimic what is in nature around you. This includes using native trees and plants to create a layered look. Each of these
layers supports different wildlife species.
The two basic types of trees are evergreen and deciduous:
Evergreen provide dense shelter for the wildlife. They are also great for nesting sites, and many offer berries for the
birds. Evergreens come in a wide range of sizes and textures. Evergreens make good screens, windbreaks or backdrops for flowering
trees, shrubs and flowers.
Deciduous trees lose their leaves in autumn. Many produce berries or nuts as well as
flowers. Their foliage is a nice contrast to the flowers below. The bark of the trees can be very interesting and colorful,
and offer nice views in winter, when the leaves are gone. Most are used as shade trees, cooling the outdoors in the hot summer
months. Some deciduous trees flower in the spring, while others put on a wonderful autumn show.
