Birdhouse Tips
Keep songbird house entrance holes 1 3/8" and smaller. Any larger will attract starlings and house sparrows.
Space nest boxes at least 25 feet apart to reduce conflicts.
Wood is the best material to use to make houses. Do not use pressure treated lumber, it can be poisonous to birds.
If you paint or stain your house, do not use any one the inside of the house.
Make a hinged roof or side for easy access to clean the house each spring.
Put at least four 1/4" drain holes in the bottom of the nest in case any moisture gets inside.
Provide a roof with a 2" hangover to protect from rain.
Do not use tin cans, milk cartons or metal for nest boxes. They can overheat the birds and eggs. Aluminum martin houses are the only exception.
Most houses should be attached to a post or building.
If your house is used by an unwanted guest, you will have to clean their nest out until they give up and don't come back.
